WZZHC Pharmacy Does More than Dispense Medication

A typical pharmacy dispenses medications and provides answers about over-the-counter and prescription drugs. The Wahzhazhe Health Center Pharmacy does that and so much more.

“We have a variety of different clinics, programs, and services that are available to our patients,” said Shelby Lewis who holds a Doctorate of Pharmacy and has been the Clinical Pharmacist at the WZZHC Pharmacy for almost five years.

“My goal as a clinical pharmacist is to help my patients become healthy whether that be with counseling patients on lifestyle changes and how to correctly take their medications or dispensing medications to help them feel better,” said Lewis. “I always want my patients to feel at ease when talking with me. I treat my patients like I would want myself and my family to be treated.”

The WZZHC Pharmacy clinics Lewis mentions include:

  • Anticoagulation Clinic: Focuses on educating patients on how to manage warfarin based on lab values.
  • Smoking Cessation Program: Counsels patients and adjusts smoking cessation medications.
  • Hepatitis C Clinic: Works closely with a team of infectious disease providers to determine the appropriate medication regimen for patients who have Hepatitis C.
  • Adult Immunizations: Immunizations include influenza, pneumonia and COVID-19.

“I hear a lot from patients that ‘I’m sorry to bother you about my medications, but…’,” said Lewis. “But that is what we are here for! No question is too silly or dumb. Pharmacists are the most accessible health care providers and we want to be there for our patients.”

In addition to a Doctorate of Pharmacy, Lewis has a Point of Sale (POS) certification which is additional training focused on insurance processing.

“When it comes to my insurance duties I try my hardest to make sure that patients are getting the medications they are needing even if we do not carry that medication,” explains Lewis. “I also work insurance rejections on prescriptions so the clinic can recoup the money we are spending on medications. This means that we can use that money to offer more services to our patients in the clinic.”

Lewis will be celebrating five years at the WZZHC Pharmacy this coming March and looks forward to continuing to care for WZZHC patients.

“Hands down the best part about my job at WZZHC is the patients,” she said. “We have some of the kindest, most caring people visit the clinic and I value every single one of them!”
