Prenatal Classes offered at Osage Nation

PAWHUSKA, Okla. (Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016) –The Wahzhazhe Health Center is excited to announce it has received a community grant from the Oklahoma March of Dimes for The Coming of the Blessing® program. The grant will enable the Wahzhazhe Health Center to provide prenatal education to all American Indian pregnant women or women who are carrying a Native child residing in Osage Nation jurisdiction.
The Coming of the Blessing® program was developed to reduce pre-term delivery and reduce infant mortality rates by teaching healthy choices and changes to make during pregnancy. Topics to be covered are; Prenatal care; Healthy eating during pregnancy; Stress during pregnancy; Things to avoid; Labor and birth; Caring for baby; Post-partum care.
The Coming of the Blessing® education classes will be available in communities throughout Osage County, with the schedule and locations to be posted throughout the year. Along with valuable health information, Osage culture will be incorporated in the classes. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own pair of Osage baby moccasins as taught by staff from the Wahzhazhe Cultural Center. The Public Health Nursing office will collaborate with the Osage Community Health Representatives (CHR) program to provide infant and child CPR instruction. Participants will also be taught how to properly install a car seat by one of the CHR car seat technicians. During the eighth session, each participant will receive a new car seat for his or her ‘Coming Blessing’. The program will continue through August 2017.
