Pawhuska, OK - The Six Nations will host a Human Trafficking Awareness in Indian Country training on January 25, 2020. The Six Nations is a working group that is comprised of the domestic violence programs within the Osage Nation, Kaw Nation, Pawnee Nation, Ponca Tribe, Otoe-Missouria Tribe, Tonkawa Tribe, and the recently added Delaware Tribe and Iowa Tribe. These Six Nations have coordinated their efforts to bring awareness to domestic violence for eight years. This month the Six Nations have focused on bringing awareness to the issue of Human Trafficking and it’s prevalence in Indian Country.

In 2015 the National Congress of American Indians found that an estimated 40 percent of women who are victims of sex trafficking identify as American Indian, Alaska Native, or First Nations.

Alexis Sutton, Prevention/Awareness Advocate for the Osage Nation Family Violence Prevention Department, is the Osage Nation representative for the Six Nations. According to Ms. Sutton, “we want to bring attention to the issue of human trafficking since a high percentage of victims are Native American. The Six Nations have worked hard organizing and planning this training, and we hope that we will be able to reach as many concerned community members as possible.”

The Human Trafficking Awareness in Indian Country training will be held at the Osage Casino in Ponca City. Lunch will be provided, and door prizes will be given away throughout the training. The speakers will be Darcie Parton-Scoon, Karen Kaniatobe and Abigail Echo-Hawk. The training is free and registration is available on Facebook and Eventbrite.

Registration is limited to the first 250 people. For more information about this training, please contact Alexis Sutton at 918-287-5253.
