The Osage Nation Museum (ONM) invites the public to the November event in its yearlong series titled “Generations of History: Collection Highlights with E. Sean Standing Bear.” Host Sean Standing Bear will be in conversation with Black Dog’s descendant, Michael Hopper, to celebrate the legacy of influential Osage leaders Black Dog I and Black Dog II. Uncover the history of Black Dog’s war shield, a powerful emblem of protection and Osage warrior tradition. All are welcome to attend on Saturday, November 15, at 1 p.m. at the Osage Nation Museum, 819 Grandview Ave., Pawhuska, OK., with a virtual option available. A reception will follow.

E. Sean Standing Bear | Standing Bear is the son of George Eugene Standing Bear and the great-grandson of Chief Fred Lookout and Julia Lookout.  He is from an esteemed family of political and cultural leaders, and his understanding of Osage life and culture comes from a unique perspective that was shaped by conversations with his grandmother, Mary Nora Lookout Standing Bear.  Standing Bear has spent years studying the Osage Nation Museum collection and is knowledgeable about its holdings and history. His extensive experience with the collection, combined with his distinctive knowledge gained through oral histories, promises a conversation not to be missed.

Michael Hopper | Michael Hopper is an Osage and Choctaw indigenous archaeologist from Norman, Oklahoma. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree from the University of New Mexico. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student of archaeology at the University of New Mexico and works for the Historic Preservation department at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He is the son of Mike and Adell Hopper and the great-grandson of Samuel and Kate Barker (Youngest Daughter of Blackdog II). He and his family are from the Hominy (ZonZoLi) District.
