Pawhuska, Okla. (Tuesday, May 2, 2017)--Osage Nation Police Department’s K9 Arc has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Arc’s vest is sponsored by Leah Beale of Oklahoma City, OK and embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of K9 Kye, Oklahoma City, OK”.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 2,400 protective vests, in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 1.9 million dollars. All vests are custom made in the USA by Armor Express in Central Lake, MI.
The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $1,050.00. Each vest has a value between $1,795 – $2,234 and a five-year warranty, and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. Police Dog Arc
Arc is a Belgium Malinois canine imported from the Netherlands. He is three years old and weighs around 105 pounds. Arc is a Duel-Purpose K9, which means he is thoroughly trained for patrol and drug detection and patrol and explosives detection. He is also certified to track, detain, bite, do article searches and find narcotics including methamphetamines, marijuana, cocaine and heroin. He has also reached master lever in obedience. Arc has searched more than fifty vehicles and has yet to have an inaccurate alert that something has been found in a vehicle. He has assisted in over thirty arrests. He has performed three tracks, including one where he found a suicidal subject in a field.
The Mission of the Osage Nation Police Department is to provide law enforcement services under the jurisdiction of the Osage Nation. The ONPD officers' primary duty is to enforce the criminal laws of the Osage Nation and the Federal Government when major crimes have been committed within state and local jurisdictions. Officers also have a duty to serve the person and to protect the property of the citizens of the community. The Osage Nation Police Department will assist the Osage Nation in protecting and enhancing Tribal Sovereignty along with protecting the religious and ceremonial beliefs of the Osage people.
